Not every director's short film can score Tilda Swinton to star, or a big screen release outside of film festivals. But then, not every director is Pedro Almodóvar, who has both for his upcoming short film The Human Voice, his first work in the English language. Find the trailer below.

Shot in nine days this past July in Madrid, the short premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Madness and melancholy intersect to thrilling effect as Almodóvar reimagines Jean Cocteau’s short play The Human Voice for an era in which isolation has become a way of life. Laws of desire become the rules of the game as Tilda Swinton’s unnamed woman paces and panics in a glorious Technicolor apartment where décor offers a window into her state of mind. A short, sharp shot of distilled Almodóvar: passion, emotion, heartbreak, wit, and melodrama exquisitely bound up in a tale for our times.

Pathé is planning event screenings of the short, which also includes a Q&A with Swinton the director, starting 7 November in UK cinemas.
