The Batman: Composer Michael Giacchino Writing The Score

Michael Giacchino

He's been behind some of the most memorable scores of the last two decades, winning an Oscar for his work on Pixar's Up. And now Michael Giacchino is teaming back up with regular collaborator Matt Reeves for the latter's latest film. The Batman.

While this sort of news would ordinarily come out via one of the trade mags or a dry studio press release, the announcement was actually made on stage at the Royal Albert Hall, where Giacchino was appearing alongside fellow composer David Arnold for a fun concert event called Settling The Score, described as "a rap battle with orchestral scores".

As witnessed by Empire's own Chris Hewitt, who was in the audience, Reeves arrived on stage to ask Giacchino if he'd take the gig on the film. Could've used the phone, we suppose, but this has more impact.

For much more fun from both Arnold and Giacchino (and Hewitt), take a listen to the frankly hilarious interview conducted with the pair in the Empire podbooth ahead of the concert. Never have two award-winning composers talked so much about toilets in one chat.

Work-wise, Giacchino's compositions will be heard in Jojo Rabbit (out here on 3 January), and Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (which, like The Batman, won't be with us until 2021) and he's also both making music for and directing an episode of Star Trek: Discovery spin-off series Short Treks, due in December.
