The Terminator franchise is littered with movies that don't ever quite seem to live up to James Cameron's franchise-launching original pair. Skydance, which saw Terminator: Dark Fate fall on its bum at the box office in 2019, is trying again – but this time, it is taking the TV anime route for Netflix.
Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote The Batman with director Matt Reeves, is cooking up the concept – which neither company has announced yet – and apparently has a fresh spin on the killer cyborg story.
"Anyone who knows my writing knows I believe in taking big swings and going for the heart," says Tomlin in a statement. "I'm honored that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to approach Terminator in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts." Japan's Production I.G. will handle the animation side of things, and we'll keep our fingers crossed to see if this can breathe actual fresh life into the idea.
