A horror film called The Hole

It’s been almost six years since the wonderful Joe Dante was given the chance to direct a motion picture. In fact, it’s been so long that we’ve been loathe to report on his latest movie, The Hole, in case it all fell apart and he was left staring into the abyss once again.

But, with today’s news that the 3D horror picture has not only gained a leading lady, but a start date, we feel it’s safe enough to tell you more. So here goes:

The leading lady is Teri Polo, best known of course for playing Ben Stiller’s long-suffering girlfriend in Meet The Parents and Meet The Fockers. And the start date is December 5, in Vancouver.

Polo will play Susan, a mother who moves with her teen sons to a house in the country. There, they discover a bottomless hole in the basement that gives them the willies something rotten. What evil lurks in The Hole?

Plenty, we’re guessing. And we couldn’t be more excited about the return to horror of Dante, who hasn’t directed a true frightflick since The Howling (or, arguably, since Gremlins). We’re not sure about the 3D thing, but we’ll reserve judgement until we see the finished article.

Haley Bennett has also joined the cast of the Mark L. Smith-penned movie, as Julie, a neighbour who’s attracted to one of Polo’s sons. Might The Hole beckon for her?

Oh, and it’ll be intriguing to see if the title remains intact, given that it clashes with the Brit psychological horror from a few years back, most notable for introducing a young Keira Knightley to the world.
