Harry Potter’s biggest threat might be from Voldemort and his dark followers, but it was a Disney cartoon about a longhaired, singing princess that managed a surprise upset and dumped the boy wizard from first place in the US box office this weekend. The Mouse House’s latest release, Tangled, arrived in second place over Thanksgiving, but rode good word of mouth to snatch the lead in its second week. The ‘toon took in $21.5 million, and has made $96.4 million so far.
The Deathly Hallows: Part 1, meanwhile, fell to second place after two weeks on release, earning $16.7 million across this third weekend. We doubt Warner Bros. will be too worried, though – the film now has $244.2 million in the bank, and that’s just the American take. The Sony/Screen Gems team will be happy, too – critically mauled dance-fest Burlesque jumped back up one place into third, shoving $6.1 million into its sparkly black piggy bank. There was also good news for Unstoppable – which climbed back up the track from fifth to fourth/joint third with $6.1 million, and Love and Other Drugs rose from sixth to round out the top five, earning $5.7 million along the way this weekend.
In sixth place was Megamind, which took $5 million, beating out Due Date, even though that film also saw its position bounce up one place from eighth to seventh and $4.2 million. Eighth was Faster, which is quickly running out of gas, and which made $3.8 million.
But that was still better than new arrival The Warrior’s Way, which mashed-up kung-fu tropes with Westerns yet only managed to arrive in ninth place and made $3 million a figure that won’t go far towards paying back its $42 million budget. Finally, in 10th place we find The Next Three Days about to leave the top 10. The Paul Haggis drama/thriller never really clicked with audiences and has only gotten away with $2.6 million this week and $18.3 million total.
