Despite all the talk of a pause in big screen Star Wars movies now that The Rise Of Skywalker is out, there seems to be an awful lot of activity - albeit most of it behind the scenes – to recruit new filmmakers to help shape the saga of that Galaxy far, far away. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lucasfilm is now approaching Taika Waititi to develop a new film.
Waititi, of course, has a strong Star Wars connection already, having directed a couple of episodes of The Mandalorian and playing bounty hunting droid IG-11. And the universe could truly benefit from an injection of his wit and style.
There's just one stumbling block – which might not be an issue if Lucasfilm is truly waiting a few years – Waititi's schedule is crowded for the foreseeable future. He's busy making Next Goal Wins and will then segue to Thor: Love And Thunder. After that? He's supposed to get back to work on the live-action Akira, though given the troubles that film has faced, we'd be shocked if it falls victim to future ambitions. And if he does indeed end up making a Star Wars movie, could he end up working alongside MCU boss Kevin Feige, who has also been approached to lend his skills to that corner of Disney? Time will tell on this one...
