Taika Waititi has just started shooting his latest film, Jojo Rabbit and, as the cameras roll, he's added the last key piece of the cast, with Thomasin McKenzie announced.
This new effort, based on Waititi's own script is set during World War II and follows a young German boy (Roman Griffith), raised by a single mother (Scarlett Johansson), and whose only ally is his imaginary friend Hitler (Waititi himself). As he's schooled by Nazi youth camps to hate Jews, his naive patriotism is tested when he meets a Jewish girl (McKenzie) that his mother is sheltering from the authorities.
Jojo Rabbit promises to be the most controversial movie of the director's career to date. Which, according to the man himself, is just the way he wants it. "I"m stoked to begin shooting my anti-war satire," Waititi says in a statement as he kicks off production. "We've assembled an incredible cast and I couldn't be more excited to finally ridicule Nazis and their beliefs. This film is going to piss off a lot of racists and that makes me very happy."
Sam Rockwell and Rebel Wilson are also in the cast, and the movie is shooting in and around Prague. As for McKenzie, she'll next be seen in Leave No Trace, which is out on 29 June.
