With Project Power tackling the topic of an advanced narcotic, a very different take on the subject is on the way via sci-fi thriller Synchronic, which has Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan confronting a strange new drug. The trailer for the film is online.

The Endless directors Justin Benson (who also wrote the script) and Aaron Moorhead are also behind this trippy thriller, in which New Orleans paramedics and longtime best friends Steve (Mackie) and Dennis (Dornan) are called to a series of bizarre, gruesome accidents, they chalk it up to the mysterious new party drug found at the scene.

But after Dennis’s oldest daughter suddenly disappears, Steve stumbles upon a terrifying truth about the supposed psychedelic that will challenge everything he knows about reality — and the flow of time itself.

There are hints of medical trouble for Mackie's character and some weird visuals, with the film due in US cinemas and drive-ins on 23 October. But despite the release, Moorhead, Benson and producer David Lawson are clear that they don't want audiences rushing to regular cinemas to see it. Which might seem counter-intuitive for filmmakers, but this are strange times.

As for UK cinemagoers, despite screenings at the London and Glasgow film festivals last year (and a seemingly better situation for our cinemas compared to the States), there's no word on a release over here yet.
