London is a city that always seems to be creeping further out into the rest of the country, but what if it was truly mobile – and very dangerous? That's the main idea behind Mortal Engines, which is being brought to the screen by LOTR art and effects veteran Christian Rivers. Check out the trailer...

Adapted by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens from Philip Reeves' novel (the first in a series), The Mortal Engines is set thousands of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event. Humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved. Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns.

Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan), who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London, finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar). Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance that is destined to change the course of the future.

With Hugo Weaving, Jihae, Ronan Raftery, Patrick Malahide, Stephen Lang and Leila George also in the cast, Mortal Engines trundles into UK cinemas on 14 December.
