Though it was fun and did decent, if unspectacular business back in 2007, we were beginning to think that the time had passed for a sequel to wave-riding penguin film Surf's Up. But never underestimate the power of a penguin, because Sony Pictures Animation is teaming up with WWE studios for a second film, one that will feature the voices of wrestling stars such as John Cena.
Though you might think the new voice cast – which also includes WWE regulars such as The Undertaker, Triple H and Diva Paige – would mean a hard pivot on the subject matter to penguins trying their hands (flippers?) at brawling, it's still set in the world of surfers and beach bums. The story this time finds Cody Maverick convincing an infamous surfing crew known as the The Hang 5 to check out a mysterious spot known as The Trenches, home to what are believed the world's biggest waves. Shia LaBeouf voiced Cody in the first film, but we don't yet know if he'll be back for this one. Or whether he'll demand to record his lines inside a lift or at the side of an active volcano as part of his latest art project.
Henry Yu, a veteran of Sony films including Hotel Transylvania, is stepping up to make his directorial debut with Abdul Williams' script. The movie should has no announced release date, but may well hit our screens next year to tie in with the 10-year anniversary of the original.
