After approximately 74 years of hunting demons and battling ghosts, Supernatural's Jared Padalecki is ready to tackle a much more imposing challenge: stepping into Chuck Norris' cowboy boots for, er, a reboot of 1990s action TV series Walker, Texas Ranger.

Anna Fricke is developing the new take on the series, which would see Padalecki as Cordell Walker, a man finding his way back to his family while investigating crime in the state’s most elite unit. Our broken widower and father of two returns to Austin after being undercover for two years for a high profile case – only to discover that there’s even more work to be done at home.

CBS TV Studios will produce the show, which has yet to lock in a broadcast home in the States. That said, a big candidate is the CW, which was home to Supernatural for its entire run and considers Padalecki one of its big stars.

And can we start the countdown for a Jensen Ackles cameo? Shirt or no shirt. Sorry Helen, we had to.
