It's usually smart for a director to these days get ahead of the scoopers and the paps in terms of revealing your superhero's costume, and with the sheer amount of scrutiny already targeted at James Gunn's Superman, you knew he'd be looking to release his own first glimpse of David Corenswet as the title character. And so here we are, Gunn hitting Instagram to present the typically quirky initial look at his Superman…

It's certainly different from the usual heroic pose or all-action shot, which feels a very Gunn thing to do. With some unknown, clearly powerful threat looming in the skies above Metropolis, Corenswet's Supes is focused on pulling on (or adjusting) his boot. And as for the suit — which looks to be inspired by several past comics and movies — it looks like it's been in the wars.

The reveal has, predictably, been divisive, with some immediately firing up the hate-wagon and others praising the look. Make your own mind up, but we're down with it, albeit looking to see it in action.

With Rachel Brosnahan on board as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, María Gabriela de Faría and Wendell Pierce (Daily Planet editor Perry White among the cast, Gunn's Superman will be in cinemas on 11 July next year.
