Not a fan of claustrophobic spaces? Then Wim Wenders’ latest film Submergence might not be the one for you. From the crushing depths of the deep sea to a windowless cell in Somalia, the German director’s new one is a meditative love story in the face of far-flung confinement.

Taking the plunge in the ocean-bound strand of the story is Alicia Vikander’s French-Australian biomathematician Danielle Flinders, searching for answers to life’s big questions at the bottom of the sea. See her in full diving suit garb in this exclusive image, found in this month’s issue of Empire.

Submergence

While Flinders enters the abyss, her lover James More, played by James McAvoy, faces interrogation and torture at the hands of jihadists. Will the pair be able to escape their isolated trappings and find a way back to each other? And how will their experiences affect their views of life, love, and memory? Find out when Submergence arrives on the big screen later this year.

The new issue of Empire is out now, showcasing the Greatest Villains of All Time, as well as exclusive looks at Duncan Jones’ Mute, the new season of Jessica Jones, and much-anticipated Sicario follow-up Soldado.
