This is the sort of cast most executives would probably dream about, and given how badly Universal could use a hit, we’re sure most of the team involved in Michael Patrick King’s new film are thanking their lucky stars or whatever deity they pray to, because he’s nabbed Meryl Streep, Sandra Bullock and Oprah Winfrey for a new, untitled ensemble comedy.

While the film doesn’t have a name, and King hasn’t actually started writing the script itself yet, he was able to pitch the three heavy-hitters with his idea for an ensemble comedy set in the world of a Home Shopping-style network.

"I came up with the idea of writing for Meryl, Sandy and Oprah, and it became so specific to them that I wanted to be sure I had interest from these ladies," King tells Deadline. "I put it in front of each of them and they all said yes. To have access to these women, tell them this story and hear yes was almost like a Greek mythological journey, with me going from one goddess to the next. It was humbling. They're all unique, and the idea of writing parts that three strong women will play is such a challenge. Their body of work is beyond reproach. It's also appealing to craft a character for Oprah to come back and play that's not Oprah."

But before they all start hugging and jumping up and down with joy, they’ll need the reality check that even getting a set of big name actresses to star in a movie doesn’t guarantee success, as with the recent remake of The Women. And even King discovered that female-flavoured comedies don’t always equal huge returns, with the somewhat unspectacular reviews and box office for the recent** Sex and the City** sequel. Of course, that film’s generally shoddy quality didn’t help.

But with some fresh subjects and new (to him) faces, perhaps his next big gig will end up a little more satisfying…
