There’s been a steady drip-feed of Stranger Things news in recent weeks — most recently confirming that Jake Busey and Cary Elwes have joined the cast — and now Netflix has given the next update: Season 3 is officially in production. In a teaser video released by Netflix, the cast reunites for a table-read of the Stranger Things 3 scripts.
The next series of the hugely popular retro-inspired sci-fi show will see all of the kid cast return, joined this time by Maya Hawke (the 19 year-old daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman). Busey will play a ‘corrupt and sexist’ news reporter called Bruce, while Elwes has signed on to play Hawkins’ sketchy Mayor Kline.
Speaking at PaleyFest earlier this year, executive producer Shawn Levy confirmed that the series will be set in the summer of 1985 — when Back to the Future was released — and will see the continuing romance of Mike and Eleven, and Lucas and Max. “They're like 13- or 14-year-old kids, so what does romance mean at that stage of life? It can never be simple and stable relationships and there's fun to that instability,” he said. Netflix hasn’t confirmed a release schedule yet, but with the new season only just going into production it seems likely that the wait for more episodes will stretch into 2019.
