Sharon** Stone** is currently enjoying the attentions of producers for the planned remake of Orson Welles classic The Magnificent Ambersons, which will begin filming in Ireland in June. A mini-series being made in two 90-minute segments for the Showtime cable service in America, the serial is based on a family saga set in 1885 and 1912.
At the time of its release it was a box office failure for Welles, as the RKO studio made unprecedented cuts to the film. Now however, it's considered by many critics to be Welles' finest achievement, even better than Citizen Kane. Production manager John Phelan says, "We are very excited about it. It will be our function to recreate the two periods in the story in Ireland, and I think we can do it. " Although the four main roles will be taken by American actors, it is hoped the rest will be Irish, as will the crew members.
