We reported just last week that Justin Theroux had signed up to write and direct a sequel to Zoolander. Now Derek himself – better known as Ben Stiller – has come forward to talk about a little of what we might expect.
"We're in the process of getting a script written, so it's in the early stages. But yeah, it's going to happen,” Stiller tells MTV.
In the fashion world, if you go away for a year, it's changed — it just happens so quickly. I think the idea in the beginning of the movie is that it's 10 years later, and Derek and Hansel (Owen Wilson) are literally forgotten. Nobody remembers who they are, so they have to reinvent themselves."
Sounds good so far. But what really makes us happy is Stiller’s acknowledgement that he’s trying to bring back one of the elements that really made the comedy work last time around: Will Ferrell’s nefarious and insane villain, Mugatu. “If Will says yes, he definitely has to be part of it. To me, Mugatu is one of the classic screen villains of all time."
Given that Stiller has been working with not only Theroux but also **Forgetting Sarah Marshall’**s Nick Stoller and original co-writer John Hamburg on the script, we’re going to be quietly excited about this one. Whether it can live up to the original is another matter…
