Can anyone be as cool on screen as Steve McQueen? And when you factor the 1968 thriller Bullitt into the equation, it becomes that much more of a question. Still, it's one that Steven Spielberg's willing to put to the test with a new film featuring the Frank Bullitt character.

This won't be a remake of Bullitt at all, to be clear, instead Spielberg has The Post co-writer Josh Singer cranking out a script that will be a new story featuring the tough-nosed San Francisco copper.

The original movie found Bullitt overseeing the protection of a mob witness at the behest of an ambitious politician. But when the witness is targeted by hitmen, Bullitt goes on the hunt for the criminals and the kingpin who ordered the hit. Beyond the sheer cool factor of McQueen, the film also boasts one of the most iconic car chases of all time, charging through (and over) the hilly streets of San Francisco.

According to Deadline, Spielberg has been interested in this one for a while, and toyed with making it his follow-up to West Side Story, but rights negotiations made the schedule impossible and he switched to shooting The Fabelmans, the movie inspired by his own upbringing instead. Still, with the Bullitt project in development at Warner Bros., expect it to feature on his To Do list, even if Spielberg doesn't make it next.
