Spawned from just the idea of the title – and the current US President's desire for the United States to claim the territory beyond our atmosphere – Space Force is ready to lift off on Netflix, and the first trailer, starring Steve Carell, has arrived.

Space Force, cooked up by Carell and his old US Office boss Greg Daniels, focuses on General Mark R. Naird (Carell), A decorated pilot and four-star general with dreams of running the Air Force. He's thrown for a loop when he finds himself tapped to lead the newly formed sixth branch of the US Armed Forces: Space Force. Skeptical but dedicated, Mark uproots his family and moves to a remote base in Colorado where he and a colorful team of scientists and “Spacemen” are tasked by the White House with getting American boots on the moon (again) in a hurry and achieving total space dominance.

This is the sort of character and situation that perfectly suits Carell, so we're hopeful for this one. And the supporting cast is stacked with the likes of John Malkovich, Diana Silvers, Tawny Newsome, Ben Schwartz, Lisa Kudrow, Jimmy O. Yang and Noah Emmerich.

Space Force launches on the streaming service on 29 May.
