Though he’s left starring roles in TV series behind for the time being, Steve Carell is not ditching the small screen altogether. He and his wife Nancy are now setting up a pilot for police comedy Tribeca at US channel TBS.
Produced by Carell’s Carousel Television arm, Tribeca will be a satirical look at the likes of CSI and Cold Case. It follows Angie Tribeca, a veteran LAPD officer working with the department’s RHCU – the Really Heinous Crimes Unit – and will probe the eccentric yet brilliant team who investigate crimes, share too much personal info and won’t stop until they figured out the case.
Carell and his wife are writers and executive producers on the pilot, and the actor will also direct that key first episode. Given Carell’s experience writing and directing episodes of the US take on The Office, we’ve got hopes it could be funny, though it does sound a tad similar to Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which is currently on the air across the pond. Tribeca is not the only show Carell has bubbling away in development: he’s also set up a game show called Slide Show at Fox.
As for his film career, he’ll next return as the galactically dim Brick Tamland in Anchorman: The Legend Continues, which arrives here on December 20.
