Steve Carell Has Conviction

As one project (Vegas magician comedy Burt Wonderstone) slides off his development schedule and into production, Steve Carell is adding another possible movie to take its place on the To Do List: he’ll produce and star in heist pic Conviction.

While we’re pretty sure the title will change (since it was already used by that based-on-real-life Hilary Swank legal drama last year), that’s not the only thing that will be shifted about the script.

Originally written as a Heat-style drama by Jonathan Herman, Conviction sees a genius bank robber serving five years in prison after his latest job goes wrong. He’s then forced by an FBI agent to entrap his protégé and thwart his plan to pull off a massive robbery of his own.

Though it landed on the Black List in its current form, Carell and Joel Silver (who optioned it in 2009) are planning to rework the script as a Lethal Weapon-esque action comedy. There’s no word on who will be doing the heavy lifting on that front, though we doubt Herman will want to be involved...
