The old Andy Warhol phrase runs that everyone will be famous for 15 minutes. Based on the sheer number of Stephen King adaptations in the works, it can now be amended to say that everyone will get a shot at a King book at some point in their lives. Add Her Smell director Alex Ross Perry to the list, who is on to make a film of King's The Dark Half.
King's tome was his reaction to being outed as thriller writer Richard Bachman, a pseudonym he used to publish more books alongside his big hits so as not to cannibalize sales. The story follows author whose books sell okay and have a literary vibe to them. They don’t sell nearly as well as grisly crime thrillers he writes under an alter-ego. Once his pseudonym is exposed, the author and his wife decide to give the other author a ceremonial burial. And then the people who were involved in doing that start turning up dead as it appears the alter ago has taken on a life of his own...
George Romero originally brought the story to the screen in 1993 for MGM and the company is looking for Perry to put his own spin on the idea. The Elisabeth Moss-starring Her Smell, has played various festivals and was debuted online here in September.
