According to Swedish news site Ystads Allehanda* Stellan Skarsgard has joined the cast of Thor, the story of the Marvel superhero / Norse god that Kenneth Branagh is directing. The question is who he's going to play.

Skarsgard taking a role in the film makes a lot of sense, since he is one of the few internationally known actors who's actually Scandanavian. But it's hard to predict who he'll play, since a typical role for him could equally be a university professor, a Viking raider or a sneering villain. We'll have to wait for official confirmation to find out who it is.

Funnily enough his son, Alexander Skarsgard (currently vamping it up as Eric on TV's True Blood), was rumoured to be one of the principal contenders for the lead role of Thor himself, which eventually went to Chris Hemsworth. Also starring are Natalie Portman, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, Colm Feore and Jaimie Alexander.

Shooting starts in January for a May 20, 2011 release.
