None of the newcomers presented much of a challenge for Pennywise and his various terrors as It continued to go on a strong run at the US box office, scoring daily records and earning $60 million in its second weekend, according to studio estimates.

That represented a 51.4% drop, yet the film showed real staying power and brought its US total up to more than $218 million. Globally, the horror movie has passed the $371 million mark. Looking to challenge this week was American Assassin, which earned mixed reviews and opened to $14.8 million, not the best sign for a movie hoping to launch an action franchise. Following that was the controversial mother! from Darren Aronofsky, which earned a rare "F" CinemaScore reaction from Stateside audiences, clearly as divided as critics when it came to the intense thriller. The movie earned $7.5 million.

Romantic comedy Home Again slipped to fourth on $5.3 million, while The Hitman's Bodyguard rounded out the top 5 with $3.5 million.

Annabelle: Creation was sixth on $2.6 million, ahead of Wind River at seventh and $2.5 million. Leap took in $2.1 million for eighth.

At ninth we find Spider-Man: Homecoming finally losing its grip on the middle of the charts, but preparing to leave with a solid $330.2 million from American audiences alone. And 10th was Dunkirk with $1.3 million.
