As if directing one of the most successful superhero films of all time with Wonder Woman (and its imminent follow-up Wonder Woman 1984) wasn't enough, filmmaker Patty Jenkins has another major blockbuster project on her roster. As revealed at Disney’s Investor’s Day, she’s in charge of the next cinematic Star Wars project, bringing the franchise back to the big screen for the first time since last year’s Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker. While much of Star Wars’ future seems to be on Disney+, it’s a sign that Lucasfilm is still very much pushing for the galaxy far, far away to be a cinema experience too.

Jenkins’ Star Wars film is called Rogue Squadron, and will see the director rocket beyond the stratosphere – going by that title, it’s going to be a fighter pilot movie, going right back to the World War II dogfight movies that inspired George Lucas way back when. Or, maybe Top Gun in space. (Take that, Tom Cruise.) And it seems like this is a very personal project for Jenkins – just take a look at the video she shared on her social media, and prepare to well up.

Little else is known about the film right now – who’ll be in it, when in the timeline it will be set, or if any familiar faces might pop up. All we know is that it’s currently pencilled in for Christmas 2023, and we can’t wait to see what Jenkins cooks up.
