The Rise Of Skywalker

While all eyes are naturally on next month's Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, there is also lots of interest in Lucasfilm's next move in terms of the franchise. While The Hollywood Reporter has heard that a new film is tentatively scheduled for 2022, we'll have to wait until January to discover who will direct it.

As part of a wider Reporter piece on her future with the films, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy says that the company (and corporate overlords Disney) is taking its time to decide the future of that galaxy far, far away. But the new movie will not be one of the new, non-Skywalker films under development by Rian Johnson, and with the departure of Game Of Thrones duo David Benioff and DB Weiss, there's a slot to be filled in the direction of the future movies.

We'll find out soon enough, though there's speculation that The Mandalorian's Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni could be involved, given their combined links to both Lucasfilm and the Mouse House, though it would surely benefit the companies to draw from a pool that isn't exclusively white and male to increase the diversity of Wars directors.

The Rise Of Skywalker, meanwhile, arrives on 19 December.
