Rumours of at least one spin-off for The Mandalorian have been floating about for a while – especially since Season 2 of the Disney+ live-action Star Wars series has seen the introduction of several extra characters with serious solo potential. And now, thanks to the big Disney Investor Day event on Thursday, we have official confirmation that two Mando-adjacent shows are happening.
One will be titled Star Wars: Ahsoka, a limited series pointing to the return of Rosario Dawson as the live-action version of Jedi warrior Ahsoka Tano, who debuted in the Clone Wars and Rebels animated series as the apprentice of Anakin Skywalker, and who appeared in a recent episode of The Mandalorian. That show should be with us at the end of next year.
The other series is titled Star Wars: Rangers Of The New Republic – and aside from that title and the logo treatment, there’s very little else to go in. But we do know that it’ll be set concurrently with the Mandalorian era (i.e. in the years after the Original Trilogy), hence that ‘New Republic’ namedrop. We'd guess it'll follow New Republic troops dealing with a dangerous new galaxy after the fall of the Empire – and going by recent episodes of The Mandalorian, there's a chance it could involve Cara Dune. According to Disney, the show will "intersect with future stories and culminate into a climactic story event."
Most excitingly for fans of Mando is the confirmation that co-creators Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni will be directly involved in both Ahsoka and Rangers. And that wasn’t the only small-screen Star Wars news that came out of the Investor Day – catch up on all the info about Cassian Andor series, a new look at The Bad Batch, and the announcement of Lando here.
