Beginning the year with a box office story that should surprise nobody, Star Wars: The Last Jedi has owned Christmas and New Year in cinemas, and has blasted through the $1 billion barrier after only three weeks on release. Its total up to New Year's Eve was $1.040 billion, with half of that coming from the States, and the UK top of the other worldwide territories with $91.5m. That makes it the number one release of 2017 in the US, and the 24th biggest film of all time globally. But it's actually only the third biggest film of 2017 at the moment, with Fast & Furious 8 ($1,235.8) and Beauty And The Beast ($1,263.5) still to catch.
Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle had a good weekend too, coming in second at the US box office this last weekend with $50.6m, taking it to a two-week total of $169.8m. That's a surprisingly big haul for a quasi-sequel to an elderly Robin Williams movie, but warm reviews and its likeable cast have clearly made it a light and easygoing family alternative to the lengthy and sometimes downbeat main competition.
Pitch Perfect 3 held on to third place with $17.8m (for a two week total of $69.2m). The Huge Ackman musical extravanganza The Greatest Showman brought in $15.3m on its first weekend, placing it fourth. And the animations Ferdinand and Coco came in fifth and sixth, with $15.2m and $6.6m respectively.
Bringing up the rear of the Top 10 were Ridley Scott's All The Money In The World ($5.5m), Darkest Hour ($5.3m), Downsizing ($4.6m) and Father Figures ($3.7m).
