Last month, fans of the extended (and somewhat defunct) Star Wars canon were teased with the possibility of Knights Of The Old Republic coming to the big screen. Kathleen Kennedy mentioned in an interview that LucasFilm were “developing something to look at” on an adaptation of the hugely popular 2003 BioWare video game, set way before the events of the Skywalker saga. It was a tantalising tease, but also somewhat nebulous – early development doesn’t necessarily coalesce into something more concrete.
But now, a Buzzfeed report offers even more evidence that KOTOR could become a movie – the project apparently has a writer in Laeta Kalogridis, who has plenty of experience working on sci-fi and genre projects.
As well as being the creator of Netflix’s cyberpunk series Altered Carbon, Kalogridis co-wrote Alita: Battle Angel, Timur Bekmambetov’s Night Watch, scripted Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island, and also partially penned Terminator: Genisys. Maybe best not to dwell on that last one too much.
According to Buzzfeed, Kalogridis has nearly finished a potential script for part one of a trilogy set in the KOTOR corner of the Star Wars universe. While Disney recently confirmed release dates for David Benioff and DB Weiss’ upcoming Star Wars trilogy spanning from 2022 to 2026, it’s unclear – and unconfirmed – whether their project has anything to do with KOTOR. Also, Disney has yet to comment on Buzzfeed's report. Either way, those rather hazy initial rumblings seem to be firming up – stay tuned for more new on whether Sith Lord Darth Malak could reach the big screen.
