"He's no good to me dead," bounty Boba Fett famously says of Han Solo when he's looking to cart the frozen scoundrel off to Jabba The Hutt. It would appear that a movie focused on Fett, alive, dead or otherwise is currently of no use to Lucasfilm. Boss Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that forward development on the standalone is now officially off.
Talking with journalist Erick Weber (Kennedy's sentiments were later confirmed by Entertainment Weekly), she said at an Oscar event for Black Panther that the project is cancelled for now.
While the film was never officially announced as in development, Lucasfilm had been trying to figure one out, originally with Josh Trank directing before he left the project in the aftermath of his Fantastic Four. More recently, Logan's James Mangold was reported as involved with the film, but even that forward motion has halted as Lucasfilm decides to throttle back on standalone films following the relative box office failure of Solo and new possibilities for future films outside the existing stories.
Also impacting any Fett film is the Jon Favreau-spearheaded The Mandalorian TV series, which is now in production and features one or more warriors of the same race. That show, a key part of Disney's planned streaming service, is due to air next year and Lucasfilm likely doesn't want to muddy the waters in the run-up to that debut. So for now, the bounty hunter will have to remain film-less...
