Last week, Disney made the first announcement about its plans for future Star Wars films, planting a flag in December 2022. One of the big questions then was, which of the movies in development would fill that slot? Now, thanks to company boss Robert Iger, we have an answer: the first in a series developed by Game Of Thrones duo David Benioff and DB Weiss.
Speaking at the MoffettNathanson Media and Communications Summit, Iger addressed a question about the way forward for that Galaxy far, far away. "We’re not going to wait until nine is out to start figuring it out, we’re actually hard at work doing that now," Iger said. "We did a deal with David Benioff and Dan Weiss, who are famous for Game Of Thrones and the next movie that we release will be theirs, and we’re not saying anything more about that." Which is hardly surprising: given how much of their creative lives Benioff and Weiss have been pouring into the fantasy series, we doubt they've had too much time to really crack on with much in the way of new projects.
There are, therefore, zero details to be learned yet about the new movies, save that they'll start arriving in 2022 and will be released every two years after that. The Last Jedi's Rian Johnson is also working on a new trilogy – which, like the GOT duo's efforts, is likely to be set away from where Star Wars has been before and feature new characters. When we'll get to see his films is anyone's guess at this point.
Meanwhile, the actual next Star Wars film, The Rise Of Skywalker, will be out on 19 December this year. In related Star Wars news, Iger also said that the Mouse House and Lucasfilm are aiming to add a third series based on the movies to the Disney+ streaming service, joining The Mandalorian and the Cassian Andor series to star Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk.
