Yesterday a select few got a glimpse of the preview for the highly anticipated Art of Star Wars exhibition, which takes place at London's Barbican next year (April 13 - September 3 2000). A collection of 'Wars 'artefacts' including models, costumes, designs and gadgets, the preview promises a fantastic insight into the myth of the Star Wars movies.
But even though not all the goodies were on show, there was a least a 'Wars star on hand to give reporters inside information on the making of the films. Anthony Daniels, the man inside C-3P0's golden skin was happy to share his memories - but unfortunately not all of them are terrific. Making the first three movies was a process Daniels described as "sheer drudgery", which the actor endured only because his agent persuaded him. And as well as hours cooped up in his suit and make-up, he and the crew had to contend with a motorised R2D2 that didn't always co-operate. "Many scenes with R2D2 had to be re-shot numerous times because his motors kept playing up and he'd rocket away from everyone", he lamented. Daniels admits getting frustrated. "I used to take my frustration out by smashing a piece of wood against the ground". Daniels' unique 'worry beads' will not be on show, but among the attractions you can feast your eyes on the following Star Wars treasures: * Conceptual drawings of droids R2D2 and C-3P0 * Anakin Skywalker's Podracer * Queen Amidala's gowns * Luke Skywalker's Jedi Robes * Princess Leia's Hoth Costume Visitors to the exhibition can also study the work of theme music composer John Williams and sound designer Ben Burtt, who devised the battle sounds unique to Star Wars. For budding George Lucas's there'll also be a chance to design your own droid.
