Since Star Trek Beyond failed to drag the big screen Trek stories out of the doldrums, Paramount has been trying for several years to re-start the engines on the franchise. The latest attempt comes from Kalinda Vazquez, who has form with the universe via her work on Star Trek: Discovery.
JJ Abrams, who helped launch the current incarnation of Trek with the 2009 movie, is on to produce the new potential effort, which is, you won't be surprised to hear, being kept a secret for now. According to Deadline, Vazquez pitched a new, original idea, which makes it sound like it won't necessarily be a retread of Kirk, Spock or any of the current crews/incarnations. That, of course, would represent a big risk in terms of trying to launch a new version, but it remains to be seen if this new movie makes it out of space dock. Vazquez, at least, has Trek form even beyond Discovery: she's named after Barbara Bouchet's Kelinda from the Original Series season 2 episode By Any Other Name.
In recent years, Paramount has had Quentin Tarantino and Mark L. Smith at work on one new potential movie, while Fargo's Noah Hawley developed another. Neither has come to fruition, so the studio is no doubt hoping that this one hits warp speed.
