Fair to say, the first season of Star Trek: Discovery took the scenic route to establish its status quo – entertaining but meandering, but showing plenty of promise along the way. The stage is set for an even more confident Season 2, with a new trailer from New York Comic Con promising fresh adventures and danger for Michael Burnham, Stamets, Sylvia, Saru, and the mirror-universe Captain Georgiou. There’s an intriguing new arrival too – as the series begins to cross over with classic Trek, we’ve got our first glimpse of Ethan Peck as Spock. And he has a beard.
It’s an intriguing new look for the usually clean-cut Enterprise crew member. Will there be a logical explanation for the Vulcan’s facial hair? Will he immediately shave upon entering Discovery? Will the entire season be predicated on Spock having a beard now? Elsewhere in the trailer, there’s Anson Mount taking on original Trek character Christopher Pike, some classic Klingons, and the mystery of the ‘red angel’ that looks set to inform the direction of the season.
We’ll find out what’s in store when the season beams in next January on Netflix here in the UK, and on CBS All Access in the States.
