Here is our first look at Star Trek Into Darkness, and it's safe to say that the Federation is in for a really bad day but that cinemagoers might be in for a good one. With a voiceover by Benedict Cumberbatch's character that's heavy on vengeance and really light on rainbows, this promises some dark times for the crew of the USS Enterprise.
brightcove.createExperiences();What can we tell from this trailer? Well, if the poster showed London suffering some devastation as a result of something-or-other, this appears to show San Francisco (which is where Starfleet Headquarters and Starfleet Academy are both based) also under attack from above. And is that one of the ships of the fleet crashing into the Bay? We know from the synopsis that Starfleet is crippled in an attack here, and that there's damage to Earth; crashing the fleet into the planet would certainly accomplish both, if you were a fiendish mastermind out for revenge of some sort.
Also on display: a lot of lava, a planet with some sort of vaguely War Of The Worlds-looking red foliage, the Enterprise emerging from the sea (a hiding place?) and significant-looking shots of Alice Eve's Yeoman Rand (we think; no confirmation on that yet) screaming and Zoe Saldana's Uhura crying. What could have upset her? We also learned that everyone looks cool in a long, hooded duster.
Star Trek Into Darkness is out, of course, on May 17 next year. Let's hope phasers are set to stunning.
