As we head into the late stages of summer, festival season is gearing up to showcase the films we’ll all be going head-over-heels for at the end of 2018 and start of 2019. On home soil we’ve got the BFI London Film Festival arriving in October, and the final film of the festival has just been announced.

Closing out this year’s LFF on 21 October will be the world premiere of Stan & Ollie, Jon S. Baird’s film telling the story of iconic Hollywood double act Laurel and Hardy. The film stars John C. Reilly and Steve Coogan in the lead roles, tracing the duo as they create some of the most beloved comedies of all time. “I’m really proud to be able to give the film its World Premiere in London; a city that’s so dear to myself and I know was to Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy,” Baird said. “Stan & Ollie, at its heart, is a love story between old friends, who just happen to be two of the most iconic comedic characters in Hollywood’s history.”

Opening the festival on 10 October will be Steve McQueen’s crime thriller Widows, starring the likes of Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki and Cynthia Eric. The full programme is due to be announced on 30 August.
