It’s been a while since there has been much movement on Spinning Gold, the biopic of disco-era pop music mogul Neil Bogart. Justin Timberlake landed the lead back in 2011, and things finally seem to be moving ahead as Spike Lee is in early talks to direct the film{
Bogart, in case the name doesn’t ring any musical bells, was the famous American record executive behind KISS, T.Rex, Donna Summer and The Village People, and was widely credited with the rise of bubblegum pop. He was no relation to Humphrey (his real name was Bogatz) but still called the label he founded Casablanca.
While the producers – including writer (and son of the subject) Timothy Scott Bogart – introduced the project at Cannes in May, there has been little forward momentum until today’s announcement, which comes not-so-coincidentally as the biopic goes to the American Film Market.
Lee is set to face a different kind of music – the opinions of critics and cinemagoers – soon, when his take on Oldboy hits screens. America gets the new film on November 27 and it arrives here on December 6.
