her (not a typo, the title is written that way) may not feature a noble Asgardian warrior and his scheming, Frost Giant brother (…he’s adopted) but it’s the latest offbeat look at life and love from Spike Jonze, which means it’s well worth checking out. The trailer is now online over at Apple.

Written and directed by Jonze, her is set in near future Los Angeles, where we’re introduced to the sad, soulful Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a man who makes a living writing letters for others, and who is dealing with a bad breakup.

He becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet "Samantha” (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), a bright, female voice, who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other.

Rooney Mara, Amy Adams and Olivia Wilde also appear in the film, which hits US screens on November 20 but doesn’t have a UK date set just yet.
