It might be Easter Holiday Weekend, but that apparently means nothing to studios looking to pimp big films that are actually, finally (hopefully) headed to screens large and small. Up first today? Warner Bros., and its LeBron James-heavy Space Jam: A New Legacy...
When LeBron and his young son Dom (Cedric Joe) are trapped in a digital space by a rogue A.I. (Don Cheadle), he must get them home safe by leading Bugs, Lola Bunny and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to victory over the A.I.’s digitized champions on the court: a powered-up roster of professional basketball stars as you’ve never seen them before. It’s Tunes versus Goons in the highest-stakes challenge of his life, that will redefine LeBron’s bond with his son and shine a light on the power of being yourself. The ready-for-action Tunes destroy convention, supercharge their unique talents and surprise even “King” James by playing the game their own way.
Yes, it's essentially a similar challenge to the 1996 original, with plenty of wackiness from the Tune Squad. The likes of Bugs Bunny, Tweety Bird, Daffy Duck, Yosemite Sam, Lola Bunny (Zendaya has been confirmed to voice her) and more show up, plus in this expanded look, lots of iconic characters from across the WB roster, including King Kong (what, one film this year wasn't enough for the big guy?) and the Iron Giant. The latter definitely gives this new film a big Ready Player One vibe.
Malcolm D. Lee is in the director's chair here, with Ryan Coogler producing. In the US, Space Jam: A New Legacy is out in cinemas and on HBO Max on 16 July, while right now it appears it'll be theatrically only in the UK on the same date.
