All that bluegrass twanging in their last-but-one movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? obviously struck a musical chord for the Coen brothers, who have now signed up to direct the musical Romance and Cigarettes. Based on the style of Moulin Rouge in which all the actors will be required to do their own singing and dancing, Romance and Cigarettes has been written by long-time Coen collaborator John Turturro. In the words of Variety, it's 'Pennies From Heaven meets The Honeymooners'. And who better to take the lead than James Gandolfini. Yes, you read that right. The man mountain best known for his portrayal as Tony Soprano has been approached to take centre stage. It would be the first singing role for Gandolfini.
