Sony Plans New Bewitched Movie

Bewitched

What hath WandaVision wrought? All right, so a scramble to find anything witch-orientated (bonus points for a classic TV property) probably can't be chalked up to Marvel's successful show. But there's something about the timing for Sony's new planned Bewitched adaptation that feels awfully close.

Elizabeth Montgomery starred in the original series, which ran from 1964-1972 on US network ABC, becoming a big hot and spawning short-lived spin-off Tabitha. Montgomery played Samantha Stephens, a witch married to an ordinary man named Darrin (Dick York, and later Dick Sargent) and whose magical powers often cause — yet, sometimes solve — a few wrinkles in her life as a typical suburban housewife.

Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett are the writers tasked with working on the script, overseen by producers John Davis and John Fox. And yes, this is not the first time Sony has looked to conjure up a film based on the show: 2005's Nora Ephron-directed meta-referencing comedy starred Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell, but lacked a lot of real magic. And a TV reboot is still in the works at ABC, but has thus been unable to find its way to screens.
