Venom

It’s fair to say that Venom proved divisive – plenty of critics didn’t like it, and audience opinions were split. More undeniable is that the Tom Hardy-starring anti-hero movie has been a huge box office hit, currently sitting with a worldwide box office haul of $780,000 – boosted by a massive reception in China. All of which means that a sequel is surely in the works, and it seems set to arrive in 2020.

That’s because Sony has staked out two 2020 release dates for upcoming Marvel projects, linked to the Spider-Man property that it owns. One film will hit cinemas on 10 July 2020, with another to follow on 2 October 2020. While neither title has been announced, it seems highly likely that one of those projects will be Venom 2, and the other will be the previously-announced Morbius The Living Vampire movie starring Jared Leto. That film, confirmed to be in the works back in June, will be directed by Life’s Daniel Espinosa and star Leto as Nobel Prize-winning biochemist Michael Morris whose experiments to cure a rare blood disease go awry.

While Sony hasn’t officially confirmed plans for a Venom sequel, that huge box office haul is all the evidence you need to be sure that we will be getting one – and it’s still got legs at the Asian box office, having opened with a huge $111 million weekend in China. Tom Hardy is reportedly signed on for two more films, too – so prepare for Carnage.
