After overcoming a wave of criticism for his early CG look, Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog made the leap from video game to movie relatively successfully, doing well enough to spawn next year's sequel. And here comes the trailer, which introduces us to both stalwart game characters Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba) and Miles "Tails" Prower (Colleen O'Shaughnessey, who has history providing his vocals in the games).
Jeff Fowler is back directing again, with writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller joined by John Whittington on the credits list. The follow-up's story finds Sonic (Ben Schwartz) settled in Green Hills, eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero, even if he's a little too rambunctious.
His test comes when Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey, joyfully sporting the game's look for his character) returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.
Yes, it'll be Schwartz vs. Elba (though neither of them were on set, of course) with the human contingent consisting of a returning James Marsden and Tikka Sumpter, plus Adam Pally, Lee Majdoub, Natasha Rothwell and Shemar Moore. But if we're honest, all most people want to see is how well Knuckles and Tails translate to the big screen.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 will be on UK cinema screens next April.
