Back in the days when Sonic The Hedgehog was an online whipping boy, reviled for the look of the main character in its first trailer, few could have imagine that it would go on to boast the biggest opening weekend for a video game-based film, or that it would spawn a sequel. But here we are.
According to Variety, Paramount and Sega are in early development on a sequel, hiring the first film's director, Jeff Fowler, and writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller to start hashing out ideas.
The first film followed the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. Sonic (with Ben Schwartz on vocal duties) and his new best friend Tom (played by James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) as he plots world domination. Two potential plot threads were teased at the end – Carrey's Dr. Robotnik, banished to another world, plans his return (and starts to look a lot more like his game counterpart), while Sonic's traditional sidekick Tails (an orange fox with twin tails) showed up looking to find our hero for help with a new mission.
No release date is on the books for this one, for obvious reasons, but you know Paramount will want it in cinemas as fast as possible.
