Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple is the connective tissue (seems fitting, given her medical training) between the various shows under Marvel and Netflix’s Defenders umbrella. And it appears we’re going to learn something new about her, Sonia Braga has joined Luke Cage as Claire’s mother.
The series, which is in production now, carries on the gritty TV extension of the Marvel Cinematic Universe launched by Daredevil and Jessica Jones. Mike Colter is back, after his introduction in the latter show, as troubled hero Luke Cage, and the story will explore a little more how he came to have that impenetrable skin and boosted strength.
Cage’s cast also includes the likes of Theo Rossi, Frankie Faison, Mahershala Ali and Alfre Woodard, playing various friends and enemies (mostly enemies), overseen by show runner Cheo Hodari Coker. “A character as strong as Claire needs an equally powerful mother, and with Sonia we found the perfect actress to deliver the stellar performance we needed,” says Marvel TV boss, Jeph Loeb in a statement. “In Marvel’s Luke Cage, fans will now get a chance to see where Claire got the fire we love her for.”
“Sonia Braga? Rosario Dawson? ‘Nuff said. I'm tuning in,” adds Coker. “When it came to finding someone who was both formidable yet possessed a light touch, Sonia was the perfect choice and has been a Godsend.” The show doesn’t have a specific launch date yet, but will arrive on Netflix next year.
