Calendar Girls director Nigel Cole will return to heart-warming real-life story territory when he brings Strange Son to the screen.

The script, written by Bruce Joel Rubin, is the true story of a mother’s attempt to communicate with her autistic son. It’ll be based on a book by Portia Iverson about her son, Dov. The memoir hasn’t yet hit bookshelves, but it tells how she researched her son’s condition to find a new way to talk to him. She eventually discovers a woman in India who had developed a rapid prompting technique. Iverson and her husband went on to set up an organisation for autism research.
