It’s been four years since Sofia Coppola released a film (Marie Antoinette), but now she’s back, and in some very familiar territory for her latest meditation on emotion, boredom and life, **Somewhere. The first trailer for the film is now online over at Apple.
In what looks and sounds at first glance like a thematic sequel to Lost In Translation (actor reconsiders life when a young woman impacts his world while staying at a luxury hotel), Somewhere swaps Stephen Dorff for Bill Murray and replaces Scarlett Johansson with Elle Fanning.
But it’s an entirely different situation – Dorff is hard-partying Hollywood type Johnny Marco, who spends his days and nights in a whirlwind of movies, parties and girls at LA’s Chateau Marmont. His existence is thrown into chaos (or should that be order?) when his 11-year-old daughter Cleo arrives for a visit. And he learns that she’s going to be around for a while…
There’s very little dialogue to be found in this first trailer: it mostly comes across as a blend of moody, image-driven tone poem and one of those videos that Apple uses to launch its shiny new products. There are glimpses of co-star Michelle Monaghan and plenty of the director’s usual solid taste in music to be found, but it’s tough to judge whether this will live up to her earlier output based on this first glimpse. But we'll have to wait a while, since Somewhere won't amble into our cinemas until next March.
