Denis Villeneuve might not have returned, but it seems like that hasn’t harmed Sicario 2: Soldado. The Sicario sequel, this time directed by Stefano Sollima, has been hailed as a strong continuation of the brutal war on drugs thriller — and with acclaimed screenwriter Taylor Sheridan penning both scripts, thoughts are now turning to a possible third instalment from him.
Sollima has some thoughts on a potential third movie — chiefly, that it shouldn’t be him who makes it. Speaking to Variety, the filmmaker said: “Every movie in these series needs to be a standalone that stays in the same world. I’d love to watch another chapter of Sicario, but it should be from a different director who has their own specific style. You shouldn’t have more than one film from the same director. Then it would be too much like a real franchise.”
With Villeneuve currently planning a double Dune feature it’s unlikely he would return for part three, and now that Sollima has ruled himself out it sounds like a trilogy-capper would indeed feature a different director at the helm. Of course, chances of a sequel also depend on the box office takings of Soldado – but early reports look like it’s on track to pull in a reasonable haul from a $35 million production budget.
