The film isn’t even shooting yet, but already producer Joe Roth is talking up the idea that Snow White and the Huntsman, starring Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart and Thor’s Chris Hemsworth, might just be the kick-off point for a trilogy of adventures.
Yes, even though it’s facing tough competition from Tarsem Singh’s Snow White and approximately 325 other iterations on that fairy tale and others, Roth and his team have apparently been making plans for more. “It’s meant to be the first in a series of films,” he tells Entertainment Weekly (via The Playlist). “This story will end, but there will be questions remaining for these three characters.”
“We retain the basic story, a young girl meant to be the queen who is cast out,” Roth says. “The Huntsman is a mercenary, in the sense that he’s a guy who is very able in the woods, more able than most anyone. His job is to capture runaway girls, who are all fleeing the kingdom because of the queen. He’s a nondescript bounty hunter, as we first meet him.”
So where could the story go? We suppose they could build in the idea that the Queen is defeated but not killed and then makes her plans to strike back. And what of the dwarves, or even Sam Claflin’s Prince Charmant? The decision on whether there will indeed be any follow-ups will likely be taken once the box office figures are tallied, but these days it would appear that anything can potentially birth a franchise.
Rupert Sanders stats filming Snow White and the Huntsman in August, with a release date set for June 1 next year.
