Originally brought to the big screen by Paul W.S. Anderson in 1995 (a less successful sequel followed in 1998), the Mortal Kombat video game has been spurring more interest for the last few years as talk of a reboot movie has grown. The project is slowly coming together with ads director Simon McQuoid entering talks to direct the new, currently untitled film.
James Wan is aboard to produce the new version for Warner Bros. and New Line via his Atomic Monster company. And Warner Bros. itself has been edging towards a new take on the film's fights after approving director Kevin Tancharoen's Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, an online short starring Jeri Ryan and Michael Jai White. That led to Mortal Kombat: Legacy, which ran for two seasons as a web series featuring much of the same cast.
Now comes the new movie, which doesn't yet have anyone involved with the web outings on board. The plot is being kept quiet, but Greg Russo wrote the most recent draft of the script. McQuoid has been building a reputation for himself with award-winning ads for the likes of PlayStation, Netflix, Range Rover and Halo.
